The
best student paper competition was introduced in 1998. Since then
students participating in the SMC conference were able to submit
in the best student paper award. An achievement plaque and a monetary
award (200 USD) will be given to the Best Student Paper presented
at SMC 2006 by the Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society. In addition,
the local organizing committee of the SMC 2006 will provide each
of the five finalists with an additional monetary award (150
USD).
In
order for a paper to be considered for the student paper competition
the following requirements should be met:
The
eligibility criteria for the competition are:
- Students
must have been at least a half-time registered student at the
time the work was completed.
- The
student is the primary author and research contributor of the
work presented in the paper.
- The
paper must be accepted to the conference
- The
lead authors of the five semi-finalist papers are required to
attend the conference and present their submission in both a special
student papers session as well as in their regular sessions
This
year has on-line paper submission and review procedure. Full papers
are submitted and each student author has an option to identify
at the submission time whether the paper is to be considered for
the Best Student Paper Competition. The conference reviewers are
responsible for reviewing each paper and for providing rating for
the quality of the paper.
The
top 12 papers will be then reviewed by the panel of six (6) judges
via the Evaluation Form for the 5 semi-finalist papers. The six
judges are from different countries and have expertise in areas
covered by the semi-finalists. Finalists will be notified by August
8, 2006.
The
panel will receive the finalist's papers prior to the conference.
A special Student Papers Session will be held at which the finalists
will present their papers. Based on both the submitted paper and
the presentation, a panel of judges will select the Best Student
Paper for SMC '06.
All
finalists will be invited free-of-charge to the Awards Banquet during
which the winner will be announced. Students participating in the
Student Paper Competition should make their plans accordingly.
Note
that all student papers will be scheduled for presentation throughout
the three-day conference as part of the normal sessions. Thus, each
semi-finalist will present his/her paper twice: once at the regular
session and once at the Best Student Paper session.
